The most common reason people stop taking iron is side effects. Ferrous sulfate, ferrous fumarate, and ferrous gluconate release free iron ions in the gut lumen, which generate free radical byproducts that irritate the intestinal lining, slow motility, and produce the nausea and constipation that make compliance difficult.
